Tour Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption: Covington, Kentucky

Just off of the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge, connecting Kentucky and Ohio, lies a European-style cathedral unlike most churches around it. In Covington, Kentucky you can tour Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, which was modeled after the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.

The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington offers a taste of Euro-style architecture right in Kentucky, just outside of Cincinnati. The massive cathedral was designed by Detroit architect, Leon Coquard. Coquard drew inspiration for the design from the Notre-Dame Cathedral located in Paris.

Services began being held there in 1901, but now you can tour Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption yourself.

Tour Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption

As you tour Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, you feel as though you are in medieval times. Sunlight streams through the giant, stained-glass mosaics, illuminating the room with color.

There is a somber silence, broken only with footsteps echoing throughout the halls. The Biblically themed paintings and statues covering the walls evokes a feeling of piety or holiness. As if this wasn’t just an everyday, ordinary building. This place is special.

The walls are completely wrapped from door to door with intricate scenes depicting ancient events. As you continue to scan the murals and artwork, you realize none of these are arbitrary. Each scene within the cathedral depicts an actual Biblical story or event.

Every single drop of paint in the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption is meaningful and purposeful. Every square inch of the church has been strategically planned and accounted for. No space wasted or misused.

It begins to set in how majestic the cathedral really is. The amount of time, labor, planning, designing, painting, sculpting, etc., that must have gone into this place is astounding. The history literally and figuratively within the walls gives you the feeling that you are in the midst of a very special place.

While mass and confessions are still held there, you can tour Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption during it’s open hours. Those hours are below:
