Living in San Gerardo de Rivas Costa Rica

San Gerardo de Rivas in Costa Rica is a beautiful small town hidden way up in the mountains. It is the last town before you reach the famous Mount Chirripó, or Cerro Chirripó, which is the tallest mountain in all of Costa Rica. The town of San Gerardo de Rivas is tucked in between awe-inspiring, scenic mountains surrounding the entire community.

For the past two months, I have been living in the small community of San Gerardo. The town consists of approximately 300 people, providing an amazing small town atmosphere. Everybody knows everybody and there is a strong sense of community and fellowship among the residents.

As you walk down the street you are greeted by everyone, whether you are a local Tico (the word used for native Costa Ricans) or a Gringo (a term used for Americans with no negative connotations). As you walk you may hear an “Adios” (when Ticos pass each other on the street they say “adios” instead of “hola”) or a “Pura Vida” (the most common greeting the Ticos use in Costa Rica meaning “pure life”) accompanied with a warm smile.

The town has only about three restaurants, two bars and two small grocery stores. There isn’t much in terms of modern attractions like you have in the United States, however the town does have current technology like internet access (obviously as I am writing this post from San Gerardo!). But what San Gerardo de Rivas lacks in amenities, it makes up for with it’s nature and landscapes.

The Nature & Landscape in San Gerardo de Rivas

All along the side of the town is a massive river which is the main water source for the people. The river constantly flows creating an amazing atmosphere with a continual soothing, ambient, rushing water sound.

Also, the town is located just below Cloudbridge Nature Reserve, a beautiful private reserve for hiking filled with waterfalls, exotic birds and animals. Cloudbridge has numerous different paths and trails you can take, offering an immersive experience in the mountains of Costa Rica.

Questions or Comments?

In summary, if you are a fan of the big city with all of it’s attractions and entertainment then San Gerardo might not be the place for you. However if you love the great outdoors, hiking, nature & wildlife, you will absolutely love San Gerardo de Rivas.
